How to Start Working as a Dental Hygienist

    SiddikBy SiddikJune 6, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

If you have a passion for oral health and enjoy working closely with patients, a career as a dental hygienist may be an excellent fit for you. Dental hygienists play a crucial role in dental practices, providing preventive dental care and educating patients on proper oral hygiene. Here are the key steps to help you get started in your dental hygienist career.

    Research Educational Requirements

The first step in becoming a dental hygienist is to research the educational requirements in your area. In most cases, a minimum of an associate degree in dental hygiene from an accredited institution is required. However, some states may have specific requirements, such as completing a bachelor’s degree or additional clinical hours. Take the time to explore various dental hygiene programs and choose one that meets your needs and goals. Ensure that the program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) to ensure the quality of education and eligibility for licensure.

    Complete Dental Hygiene Program

Enroll in a dental hygiene program and successfully complete the coursework and clinical training required to earn your degree. Dental hygiene programs typically take two to three years to complete, depending on the program structure and whether it’s a full-time or part-time program. During the program, you will learn all the essential skills. Clinical experiences will provide hands-on training in performing dental cleanings, taking X-rays, and assessing oral health.

    Gain Practical Experience

After obtaining licensure, gaining practical experience is crucial to build your skills and confidence as a dental hygienist. Seek employment opportunities in dental practices, clinics, or public health settings. Working alongside experienced dental professionals will provide valuable hands-on experience and exposure to different patient populations and dental procedures.

    Continuing Education

Continuing education is vital for dental hygienists to stay current with advancements in the field and maintain their licensure. Participate in workshops, seminars, and online courses to expand your knowledge, learn new techniques, and stay informed about emerging trends in dental hygiene. Education opportunities also allow you to specialize in specific areas of dental hygiene, such as periodontics or pediatric dentistry. These specializations can open up additional career opportunities and enhance your expertise in a particular field.

    Networking and Professional Involvement

Networking is crucial for career advancement in any field, including dental hygiene. Join professional organizations such as the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and participate in local or regional dental hygiene societies. These associations provide opportunities to connect with other dental hygienists, access resources, and stay updated on industry news and developments. Attending dental conferences and seminars can also expand your professional network and provide opportunities for career growth. Networking with dentists, dental specialists, and other dental professionals can lead to job opportunities or collaborations in the future.

Update Your Resume and Job Search

When you’re ready to start working as a dental hygienist, update your resume to highlight your education, licensure, and relevant experience. Emphasize your clinical skills, patient education abilities, and any additional certifications or specializations you have obtained.

Utilize online job boards, professional networks, and dental industry-specific job websites to search for dental hygienist positions. Consider reaching out to dental practices directly, even if they don’t have current job postings. Networking connections and informational interviews can lead to hidden job opportunities.

Starting a career as a dental hygienist requires completing an accredited dental hygiene program, obtaining licensure, gaining practical experience, and engaging in continuing education. By following these steps and staying proactive in your professional development, you can embark on a rewarding career as a dental hygienist and contribute to improving oral health in your community.
