The Cricket World Cup first occurred in England in 1975 as a series of one-day matches. In 1987, India and Pakistan hosted the first event outside of England. Over the years, it has become the biggest international event on the cricket calendar. Many countries participate in it today, including New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. It is held on a four-yearly basis and is one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.
Different formats
The Cricket World Cup starts with a ‘round-robin stage’ where all the teams play against one another. Matches are 50 overs per team, with an over consisting of six balls. Whoever makes the most runs wins. The winners earn two points, and if there’s a tie, the teams share a point each. The four teams at the top of the round-robin stage go to the semi-finals. The two winners in the semi-finals compete in the finals.
A one-day international match typically lasts about seven hours, while a T20 match usually lasts only three to four hours, and each team is given 20 overs. A T20 is a shorter and faster-paced game.
American cricket fans will look forward to watching the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which occurs every two years. In 2024, the event will take place in the United States and West Indies. Sports betting has become popular with legalization in many states. In Michigan sports betting is available offline and online, and sports bettors enjoy placing bets on which teams will win.
The 2023 Cricket World Cup
In 2023, ten teams took part in the event held in India. India served as a co-host on three previous occasions, but it was the first time it was the sole host. India was also considered the team to beat, but Australia and England were both seen as strong contenders. In the final, Australia defeated India by six wickets to win its sixth title. Millions of fans across the world tuned in to watch.
How is cricket played?
Cricket takes place on an oval field with a pitch in the center. Play involves using a cricket ball and bat. At each end of the pitch are three wooden sticks known as wickets. Two teams of eleven players each compete against one another. The game is split into innings, and in the first inning, one team bats.
The batting team has two players at either end of the pitch who take turns batting while the other team bowls and fields. The batting team tries to score the most runs, and the opposing team has to prevent them from scoring. In the second inning, the teams swap. The team with the highest number of runs wins at the end of the day.
A cricket test match
Among all the different cricket formats, a test match is the longest and oldest one. It may last up to five days, and each day has a minimum of 90 overs. There isn’t a fixed number of overs per side. Both teams have two innings each. This format tests the endurance and skills of the two teams. The complaint that test matches went on for too long led to one-day internationals and the Cricket World Cup.
